Albumin is the most abundant protein in the blood and is made by the liver. The value is a marker of liver function, nutritional status, and chronic illness.

Albumin binds many substances in the blood, including hormones, drugs, and calcium, and maintains fluid balance between blood and tissues. Changes develop slowly.

What does low Albumin mean?

Low albumin can reflect liver disease, malnutrition, chronic inflammation, or protein loss via kidneys or gut.

What does high Albumin mean?

High albumin most often reflects dehydration.
