Magnesium is involved in hundreds of enzyme reactions and is needed for muscle, nerve, and heart function. Deficiency is uncommon in otherwise healthy people but can cause muscle cramps and palpitations.
Serum magnesium reflects only a small fraction of the body's total magnesium - most is in bone and cells. The value is still useful as a first indicator.
What does low Magnesium mean?
Low magnesium appears with dietary or absorption deficiency, alcohol use, diuretics, and severe diarrhoea.
What does high Magnesium mean?
High magnesium is uncommon and usually reflects kidney failure or excess supplementation.
